A couple hundred former Continental Tire workers and their allies rallied in uptown Charlotte, N.C., after the annual Labor Day Parade on Sept. 4. They were protesting layoffs and free-trade agreements that harm workers. And they demanded a living wage of at least $10 an hour in Charlotte.

After the Steel Workers union, which represents the Continental Tire workers, refused wage concessions, more than 700 workers lost their jobs at the Charlotte plant. (wcnc.com) The bosses at Continental Tire decided to shift production to another country where they could pay lower wages and minimize or eliminate benefits altogether.

The workers vowed to continue their fight for good jobs at living wages. Even the National Labor Relations Board filed a complaint against Continental Tire based on the bosses’ tactics during contract negotiations with Steel Workers 850L, organizer of the rally.
