BART workers defend contract

Published Jul 15, 2005 10:35 PM

The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit workers and representatives of all the local labor councils rallied inside the BART administrative office building June 28 to support their representatives in intense contract negotiations with BART management. This unity brought a tentative agreement in the early morning of July 6—when the five unions involved, including Amalgamated Transport Local 1555 and Service Employees Local 790, were set to strike. BART bosses met most of the unions’ pension, health-care, work-rules and wage demands, thus avoiding the certain nightmare of some 2,700 strikers shutting down the transit service used daily by thousands of Bay Area workers.
