Dec. 7 & 9: ‘Free Mumia’ activities

On the 32nd year of Mumia Abu-Jamal’s wrongful incarceration, a press conference is set for noon on Dec. 9 in front of the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office at 3 South Penn Square to outline the case for Abu-Jamal’s innocence, call for his immediate release and announce the launch of the Campaign to Bring Mumia Home. At 6 p.m., an organizers’ meeting will be held at the Asian Arts Initiative.

These activities will culminate a weekend of events in Philadelphia and New York, including forums on the case and its broader significance led by high school and college activists.

On Dec. 7, in Philadelphia, Youth on the Move will be held at the Asian Arts Initiative from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. And in New York, the We Want Freedom Scholarship launch will be held in Room B-501 at Hostos Community College in the Bronx from 1 to 4 p.m.

In 2011, Abu-Jamal’s death sentence was declared unconstitutional and commuted to life without parole for allegedly murdering Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner in 1981. Despite clear evidence of police perjury and evidence tampering to obtain a conviction and in spite of compelling evidence of innocence, for 32 years Abu-Jamal has been denied basic rights.
