FIST attends SDS national conference

Clarksville, Tenn. — Students for a Democratic Society held their national convention in Clarksville, Tenn., over the weekend of Oct.11-13. The gathering brought youth from all different areas of the country to share experience in their struggles and to discuss common fightback strategies. Workshops were held on topics including rape culture, student organizing, the environmental movement, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and many others.

Sara Flounders, co-director of the International Action Center, spoke on the importance of building the anti-imperialist movement and about her recent trip to Syria in an anti-war delegation. Along with highlighting the heinous lies pushed by the capitalist media to justify imperialist wars, Flounders stressed that it is possible and necessary to unite the anti-war movement with the struggles at home against austerity and attacks on the working class and oppressed communities.

Fight Imperialism, Stand Together was in attendance to show continued support for SDS and the desire to work with all young people organizing to fight back against imperialism and oppression. A workshop was held by FIST members which discussed what imperialism is; the role of imperialist war in the epoch of capitalism at a dead end; and how we can unite the struggle against imperialist war with the struggles for jobs, education and health care.

As young revolutionaries living in the time of unending capitalist crisis and expanding attacks at home and abroad, it is of great importance that we work with all those struggling against imperialism and continue to organize on our campuses and in our communities.
