No charges for Baltimore killer cops

State’s Attorney for Baltimore City Gregg L. Bernstein announced Jan. 24 that the three police officers responsible for the brutal death of Anthony Anderson Sr. would face no charges or even a penalty. The stunning news came when Bernstein met with Anderson family members, Baltimore People’s Power Assembly leaders Sharon Black and Rev. C. D. Witherspoon, who is also president of the Baltimore Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and the family’s attorney, J. Wyndal Gordon.

At a 4 p.m. press conference later that day, the family, PPA and attorney announced renewed community protest demanding justice on Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. at the site of Anderson’s killing, Montford Ave. at Biddle Street.

In the early evening of Sept. 21, without warning, Baltimore police officers grabbed Anderson from behind, lifted him into the air and slammed him onto pavement, causing his death. His 2- and 9-year-old grandchildren, his children and mother witnessed what the Oct. 2 official autopsy report called a “homicide.”
