More than 100 people from the Restaurant Opportunities Center, Occupy Wall Street Labor Outreach Committee, 99 Pickets, Desis Rising Up & Moving, a rank-and-file retail workers group and several unions protested Bill Simon’s talk at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in the early morning on Jan. 15. Simon is the president and chief executive officer of Walmart U.S., executive vice-president of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., and director of the board of Darden Restaurants, Inc., the world’s largest restaurant company. The protesters, mostly young people of color, chanted, “Walmart cheats, Walmart hates, Walmart discriminates!” and “Bill Simon — eschucha! Estamos en la lucha!”
