US: United National Antiwar Coalition (UNAC)
Comrades and friends,
I bring you warm greetings from the United National Antiwar Coalition (UNAC). I would like to thank Worker’s World for their indispensable work in building UNAC and the antiwar movement.
I also want to thank the members of Worker’s World for once again inviting me to your conference. It is so nice to see the growth of WW as each conferences that I have attended is bigger than the last.
While it is impossible to tell exactly what we will face as we enter the new year, we have some good hints. We need to be concerned about the recent palace coup in Saudi Arabia and their recent kidnapping of the Lebanese Prime Minister along with the recent increase in attacks on Hezbollah and Iran by Saudi Arabia, Israel and the U.S. This can portend a new phase in the war in Syria and in the region in general. The situation with the DPRK and Venezuela are still critical as the U.S. continues its saber rattling against these countries. The attempts of the U.S. to isolate Russia and increase its military presence in Asia and Africa also create increase danger of imperialist war.
The wars at home are also being increasingly sharply waged. The attempts at “tax reform” and to gut the greatly inadequate health care system are examples of the U.S. capitalist class trying to stave off the crisis of capitalism by continuing to transfer wealth from the working class and the poor to the obscenely wealthy. We are witnessing increasing attacks on unions and the growth of the white supremacist movement. Racism, Islamophobia, Sexism and attacks on immigrants have reached new heights along with attacks on civil liberties and freedom of speech.
It is only through our collective work that we can build the kind of movement needed to counter these attacks and build a world without war and where human needs is put above profits.
