Press Release from junge Welt: Protest Vigil for Cuba in Front of the U.S. Embassy in Berlin, September 12-19, 2026. Translation: John Catalinotto

Dear Colleagues,

Berlin vigil set for solidarity with Cuba. / junge Welt

On behalf of the Unblock Cuba coalition and over 50 participating organizations, we would like to inform you about the upcoming protest vigil for Cuba outside the U.S. Embassy in Berlin at the Brandenburg Gate from Saturday, Sept. 12, through Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026, and cordially invite you to stop by the protest vigil and report on it.

The current U.S. administration under Donald Trump has significantly tightened the blockade measures in an effort to bring the Caribbean island nation of Cuba politically to its knees. These measures not only severely disrupt the island’s energy and, consequently, its water supply; they are also costing many people their lives, as hospitals can no longer perform surgeries and deliver medications — nor provide lifesaving equipment for premature infants; these are no longer available.

In Cuba, as well as around the world, resistance is mounting against this barbaric action by the U.S. government. The overwhelming majority of United Nation member states are calling for an immediate end to this inhumane blockade.

In Germany, more than 50 organizations and many individuals have joined forces to clearly demonstrate their support for this demand through a protest vigil in front of the U.S. Embassy in Berlin.

Week-long vigil starts in Berlin, Germany, Sept. 12, 2026, with bicycle ride from the Cuban Embassy in Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood to Brandenburg Gate. Here, sign held across from U.S. Embassy reads: ‘To the USA: Hands off Cuba! (I’ve demanded that since 1961)’ / junge Welt

Among the 50 are solidarity organizations such as Netzwerk Cuba and KarEn, labor unions, various media outlets such as the daily newspapers junge Welt and nd (formerly Neues Deutschland), youth organizations such as DIDF-Jugend, Solid, and SDAJ [Youth organization of German Communist Party (DKP)]; party structures (including the Bundestag parliamentary group of Die Linke; the DKP’s Party Executive Committee and the Bundnis Sahra Wagenknecht group of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg); and other organizations (such as Naturfreunde Berlin and the International Peace Bureau, IPB).

The protest vigil will take place day and night in Berlin from Saturday, Sept. 12, through Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026, directly in front of the U.S. Embassy at the Brandenburg Gate.

In addition to a series of events and discussions, performances by various artists are planned, including actress and singer Chris Dörk, singer-songwriter Wenzel and rappers Masur and KontA. You can find the complete program in the attached schedule. The protest vigil will kick off with a bicycle parade from the Cuban Embassy to the U.S. Embassy, and an encirclement of the U.S. Embassy is also planned for the closing event.

For more information [in German], visit unblock-cuba.org. Download the protest vigil program: unblock-cuba.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Flyer-Unblock-Cuba-Protestwache.pdf

The protest vigil will also feature an information tent where media representatives can pick up a press kit. Event organizers will be available on site to answer any questions, but you are also welcome to contact me at any time.

With best regards,

Nick Brauns, Editor-in-Chief, daily newspaper junge Welt
