On Labor Day, Workers World says: Support immigrants! ICE out!

Since 1959, when the first issue of Workers World was published, this newspaper has published news about workers’ struggles. This issue, published prior to Labor Day, stresses the need for a bold union-wide offensive against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Border Patrol’s war on immigrants, ordered by the Trump administration. This is urgent! Act now!

Nurses boldly demonstrated in Portland, Maine, Aug. 5 to demand the release of their colleague Debora Kapisha, RN, from the clutches of ICE, setting an example for all workers. Within 24 hours, these unionized healthcare workers mobilized and won her freedom. National Nurses United calls ICE “a violent, paramilitary organization that must be promptly abolished.” (See “Nurses’ union forces ICE to release a colleague.”)

Opposing the racist anti-immigrant attacks in Minnesota, a “unique general strike” was held there on Jan. 23 and elsewhere in solidarity. Thousands of workers struck and businesses closed. The organizers — labor unions, community groups and other forces — demanded ICE leave their city and end its abusive operations.

After Border Patrol agents killed Alex Pretti, a Veterans Affairs Medical Center   nurse and member of American Federation of Government Employees, in Minneapolis, the union called a Feb. 1 national day to honor him, with vigils outside VA hospitals in 22 cities and demonstrations in Portland, Oregon and Seattle.

The Minnesota AFL-CIO and Communication Workers of America demanded ICE leave the state. The Service Employees Union, American Postal Workers Union and United Electrical Workers also denounced ICE.

On Labor Day 2026, WW expresses solidarity with all workers, especially immigrants, Black, Latiné and other workers of color who risk their lives to earn a living. We support unions and workers who protest this government repression — and those who defend and protect their migrant coworkers and neighbors. WW encourages all unions to condemn ICE and join anti-ICE demonstrations.

Forging class solidarity is the duty of labor unions. This Labor Day is a critical time to not only say it — but show it — on signs and banners and to loudly chant: “Support migrants!” “No to racism!” “ICE out!”

Our newspaper is partisan, siding with workers and oppressed people fighting for their rights against capitalist bosses, government agencies and their police forces.
