Cuban medical brigade expands Venezuela quake response

Despite intense hardships created by the U.S. blockade and embargo of Cuba, doctors from Cuba continue to provide care abroad. Telesur English published the following report on the role of Cuban medical teams in Venezuela on June 27, 2026.

Cuban medical teams remain deployed across Venezuela’s earthquake-affected regions after authorities confirmed all collaborators are safe and continuing emergency healthcare services. Members of Cuba’s medical mission in Venezuela have been providing uninterrupted healthcare to people affected by the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes that struck Caracas, La Guaira and other parts of the country on June 24. 

Medical personnel were deployed to impacted communities immediately after the earthquakes to support emergency response efforts.

Emergency response in La Guaira

Following the state of emergency declared in La Guaira by Acting President Delcy Rodríguez after 250 buildings collapsed, Cuban Ambassador Jorge Mayo and the head of the Cuban Medical Mission, Dr. Yusleivis Martínez, visited healthcare facilities across the coastal state where Cuban professionals provide medical services to the Venezuelan population.

Martínez told accredited Cuban media that the mission contacted its 24 state coordinators as soon as the disaster became known to verify the status of all personnel.

He said every collaborator was confirmed to be in good health and that medical teams requested immediate deployment to healthcare and relief operations in all affected states.

Cuban health workers continued providing medical assistance throughout Wednesday night [June 24] and into Thursday morning. Martínez also reassured families in Cuba that all collaborators remain out of danger, are in good health and continue to participate in emergency medical operations.

Young physicians joined humanitarian response efforts, treating injuries, bruises and hypertensive crises.

Patients in La Guaira acknowledged the work carried out by the Cuban medical professionals. Cuba’s Minister of Public Health, Dr. José Ángel Portal, also spoke with teams across the country’s 24 states and confirmed they remain deployed in healthcare and relief activities.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said he had spoken with Ambassador Jorge Mayo, who confirmed that all Cuban collaborators are safe and actively assisting the Venezuelan people in the emergency response.

According to the latest official report, the earthquakes have left over 1,450 people dead and 3,360 injured. Cuban medical teams continue providing uninterrupted care in the hardest-hit areas, including the “Doctora Dora Mercedes González” Comprehensive Diagnostic Center, known as “La Atlántida,” in La Guaira state.
