Mumia Week 2026
#MumiaWeek26, April 19 to April 25.
Philadelphia — Unjustly imprisoned for over 43 years and experiencing serious health problems due to prison policies of medical neglect, Pennsylvania political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal turned 72 on April 24. In celebration of his birthday and to broaden political and organizational awareness of his case and the need to free all U.S. political prisoners, a series of events was organized as Mumia Week 2026 — #MumiaWeek26.

The week kicked off April 19 with an exciting gathering at Tabernacle United Church in West Philadelphia organized by the Church of the Revolution. Pam Africa, Baba Zayid Muhammad, YahNé Ndgo and Ant Smith energized the crowd with the necessity to free political prisoners, followed up with comments from the audience that continued the theme of united resistance.

Everyone joined together in a community dinner that included a recognition of the participants who marched 103 miles from Philadelphia to State Correctional Institution (SCI) Mahanoy last December. Hot off the press, a new booklet on the march was available for sale.

The next day, an Innocence and Abolition Arts and Crafts Night was held to prepare signs for the April 25 Innocence March and Block Party. People gathered at the Girardin Wellness Gardens in the East Parkside neighborhood of Philadelphia to support the residents’ struggle against eviction. The Girardin Wellness Garden has been dealing with shady land developers who want to steal the space away from the community. What better way to live Mumia’s politics than to occupy that plot and give it back to the people!

At the art build, expert memory workers Lunise Cerin and Wynn Eakins guided participants through a presentation on people, including Mumia, who have been convicted but are innocent. They spoke of revolution in Philadelphia’s history and re-imagining innocence through art. The group came together for an inspiring garden party under the stars, creating banners, signs and other materials that were used at both the April 24 and April 25 Mumia marches.

Mumia Week Trivia Night
Black Alliance for Peace, Philly Palestine Coalition and Mobilization4Mumia put together a fun Trivia Night Teach-In on April 23 at Tattooed Moms featuring game show foibles, bar food and friendly competition as activists learned from political prisoners and dissected the systems of separation and extraction stacked against them.
The room was packed with militants — young and old — who divided into smaller groups to form teams for a political “Jeopardy” challenge.

Philly recognizes Mumia’s birthday
On April 24, Mumia’s birthday, activists held a protest in front of District Attorney Larry Krasner’s office across from City Hall to point out his refusal to seek justice for Mumia. Organized by Mobilization4Mumia and endorsed by many organizations, the event was the first of planned weekly Fists Up Friday protests at Krasner’s office from now until July 3.
After hearing from several speakers, the participants marched to an inside gathering at the Friends Center that featured dinner, speakers, poetry, a film and shared birthday cake.

March of Innocence concludes Mumia Week
Despite a cold rain, activists marched from Malcolm X Park to the One Art venue in Philadelphia on April 25. There, an indoor block party featured food, vendors and speakers, including Mama Pat Vickers with the Human Rights Coalition and Ismael Jimenez, Director of Curriculum in city schools. Jimenez helped institute an African American history curriculum that includes the bombing of MOVE and is now threatened with suspension. The featured speaker was Chairman Fred Hampton Jr. of the Black Panther Party Cubs, an organization of descendants of Black Panther Party members. Gabe Bryant and Mike Africa Jr. moderated the event that concluded the week of activities organized by Mobilization4Mumia to raise awareness of the struggle to free Mumia and all political prisoners.

Other events for Mumia took place in Houston, Texas and in England, France and Germany. The independentist movement of French Guiana held a march for Mumia and their own political prisoners on April 23 through 24.
