Seattle high school students walk out against ICE

Thousands of students from 17 Seattle high schools walked out on Feb. 5 and marched to City Hall. The youth, angered by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids both locally and countrywide, took over City Hall Plaza and the streets around it and rallied. They then marched on the Space Needle and the federal building.

The students demanded that the city provide protections from the brutality and all-around terror of the ICE police, who have continually invaded the community. They marched in solidarity with murdered activists Renee Good and Alex Pretti and the far-reaching Minneapolis general strike. One student speaker spoke out against the detainment by ICE of a student from Franklin High School just the day before.

The ICE invasion of the schools and immigrant communities goes hand in hand with the U.S.-sponsored Israeli invasion and occupation of Gaza and the U.S. attacks and siege of Venezuela. The U.S. war at home grows out of its wars abroad.

The students’ walkout and march were sponsored by the Seattle Student Union, ICE Out of Schools and Puget Sound Revolutionary Youth.
