Migrants rebel in South Texas detention center

A revolt broke out on Jan. 24 at the South Texas Family Residential Detention Center, the largest migrant detention center in the U.S., located in Dilley, Texas, about 70 miles south of San Antonio. 

Guards forcibly ordered attorneys to leave the concentration camp while detainees, many of them children, stormed into open areas of the concentration camp chanting “¡Libertad!” (Freedom!) as well as “Let us out!” according to an immigration attorney, Eric Lee, who witnessed the event. Lee’s clients told him the revolt was triggered by concerns over the treatment of Liam Conejo Ramos, a five-year-old taken into custody with his father in Minnesota on Jan. 23 and transferred to the Dilley facility.

The revolt also unfolded against what Lee described as harsh day-to-day conditions inside the concentration camp, which he characterized as “a horrible, horrible place.” He alleged that drinking water is “putrid” and often undrinkable and that meals have contained “bugs, dirt and debris.”

This combined with the detention of an innocent five-year-old boy has led to the situation boiling over into a full-blown rebellion in solidarity with the people of Minneapolis who are also fighting ICE thugs hired by the Department of Homeland Security to tear families apart.
