On the fifth anniversary of the coup in Honduras, the Bay Area Latin America Solidarity Coalition and Hondurans in Resistance of Northern California held a rally in San Francisco’s Mission District to demand “Stop the violence” and “Defend human rights” in Honduras, after five years of death, fraud, repression, militarization and corruption. It has been five years since a military coup overthrew the democratically elected government of President Manuel Zelaya. The U.S. government has continued to support the repressive governments that issued from the coup.
The June 28 rally also defended Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution. The organizers demanded, “Stop U.S. interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs” and for Washington to “recognize the Maduro government.” The U.S. has yet to recognize Venezuela’s democratically elected president, Nicolás Maduro, but instead continues to fund the opposition, in an attempt to undermine and destabilize Maduro’s government.
Workers World Party, the Answer Coalition, the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front/FMLN, the Frente Nacional de Resistencia Popular/LIBRE Nor-Cal, the Freedom Archives, the Haiti Action Committee, the International Action Center, Marcha Patriótica/Colombia, the Marin Task Force on the Americas, the Nicaragua Center for Community Action, Peacemakers, the National Committee to Free the Cuban 5 and School of the Americas Watch-San Francisco — all endorsed the rally.
