Restaurant workers: ‘Stop wage theft’

In a powerful demonstration of support, dozens of people marched into Liberato restaurant in the Bronx demanding better wages and working conditions for the workers on April 19. The Rude Mechanical Orchestra intensified the spirit and drama of the event, accompanying protesters as they chanted for the end of wage theft and abusive treatment of workers.

The action was organized by the Laundry Workers Center, whose members work at the restaurant. People first gathered for a rally at the offices of Picture the Homeless and then marched to the restaurant at 183rd Street and Jerome Avenue. The workers delivered a letter to the bosses demanding fair pay and just treatment. The protest was the beginning of a campaign for workers’ rights.

Protesters then rallied outside as people spoke about the impossibility of surviving on the minimum wage and cruel working conditions. Speakers also called on people to join the New York City May Day demonstration for workers and immigrant rights, a $15 minimum wage and legalization for all.

Several groups participated in the action, including Picture the Homeless, the People’s Power Assemblies, New Immigrant Community Empowerment, 99 Pickets and Occu-Evolve.
