NEW YORK

Haitian community thanks Cuba for aid

Published Jun 2, 2010 5:00 PM

Both before and after the Jan. 12 earthquake, Cuban doctors and nurses have provided free and greatly appreciated medical care to the Haitian people at the invitation of the Haitian government.

To show the appreciation of the Haitian community in New York City, Haïti-Liberté, a newspaper published in Brooklyn but distributed in the Haitian diaspora as well as in Haiti, held a reception and video showing at their office on May 29, followed by a speech by the Cuban Ambassador to the United Nations, Pedro Nuñez Mosquera, with microphone.

The video “Fireflies in the Night/Luciénagas en la noche” focuses on the work that students and graduates of Cuba’s Latin American School of Medicine (Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina — ELAM) are doing in the tent/tarp camps that shelter about 1 million Haitians still living on the streets four months after the quake.
