Driver's licenses & immigrants
Immigrants face the loss of jobs and mobility as states from
New York to California attempt to curtail undocumented workers'
right to obtain a driver's license.
In New York City Brian Barraza, president of the Association
of Mexican-American Workers, told Workers World that as a
result, "There's going to be more people that don't have
work--livery, taxi drivers. Mothers and fathers that go with
their kids to the schools and they are going to have to
walk."
He said many will be forced "to drive without a license just
for survival, not because we want to break the law.
"You know the situation for the immigrants after Sept.
11--they are attacking the immigrant people," Barraza said. "So
we are trying to say to the people of this country that we are
supporting the economy of the United States--we are doing labor
work.
"The government is trying to divide us. And we, the
immigrants, should not be the target. The target should be the
government."
