Activists tell Bloomberg, cops
'Central Park & the streets belong to the people'
Labor leader and New York co-convener of the Million Worker
March, Brenda Stokely, spoke at an Aug. 27 press conference in
front of NY City Hall. The press conference was called to
denounce the Bloomberg administration and the police
authorities' denial of permits for rallies in Central Park on
Aug. 28 and Aug. 29 against the Republican National Convention
and police repression. Other speakers included City
Councilpersons Charles Barron and Bill Perkins; Nellie Bailey,
Harlem Tenants Council; LeiLani Dowell, Queers for Peace &
Justice; Julie Fry, Fight Imperialism--Stand Together (FIST)
youth group; Not In Our Name representative; Dustin Langley
from the GI resistance group SNAFU; and Larry Holmes and Sara
Flounders, co-directors of the International Action Center.
Over 50 activists attended the press conference called on one
day's notice. Many held signs exposing police repression during
the RNC especially targeting young people.
