OLYMPIA, WASH.
Teachers, students protest budget cuts
Demanding funding for education, 25,000 teachers, students
and parents from all over the state of Wash ington went to the
capital of Olympia for a day of action on Jan. 14. School
districts all over the state cancelled classes in support of
the teachers' action. In light of a state budget deficit, Gov.
Gary Locke proposes to cut funding for education, ignoring the
will of the people who recently passed two initiatives--for
higher salaries for teachers and to reduce class sizes.
