NYC protest calls for low fares and no war
Protesters disrupted a New York City Metropolitan
Transportation Authority hearing about a fare hike and service
cuts in midtown Manhattan on Feb. 5.
The delegation from the International ANSWER--Act Now to
Stop War & End Racism--coalition charged that the fare hike
is "a war tax."
They pointed out that 1 percent of what the Pentagon plans
to spend on the war against Iraq would cover the MTA's supposed
deficit. Not only that--it could actually pay for lowering the
fare, and without service cuts.
Police presence--uniformed and plainclothed--was heavy. Cops
tried to quickly remove protesters. The demonstrators also
demanded free trains and buses on Feb. 15 for the mass anti-war
rally.
