SAN FRANCISCO
'Bush, Pastrana are the real terrorists'
The resistance of the peoples of Latin America to U.S.
imperialism was the theme of two recent actions here.
On Feb. 17 a forum was organized by the International Action
Center and the Committee for a New Colombia (CNC). Rosa
Peñate from the IAC chaired the well-attended meeting.
Richard Becker from the IAC explained that after 100 years of
U.S. doctrines in Latin America, the region continues to be the
"backyard" of U.S. imperialism. Salvador Cordon from the
FMLN-SF spoke about the struggle of the people in El Salvador.
Ramón Acevedo from CNC talked about resistance of the
people's movement in Colombia and Alicia Jrapko from ANSWER
explained that people in Argentina said "enough" to the
policies of hunger dictated by the IMF and are the ground zero
for the movement against globalization.
Four days later, the chant "The biggest terrorists in the
world today are Bush, Pastrana and the USA" could be heard
bouncing off of the Colombian Consulate in downtown San
Francisco during the afternoon rush hour. This protest took
place as the Colombian air force, with direct U.S. military
support, was raining down 500-lb. bombs on 85 villages in the
former demilitarized zone of Colombia.
Gloria La Riva of the International Action Center told the
protesters and people leaving work that no one should think
this is anything but a U.S. war against the liberation forces
and popular movements in Colombia. "This is a war for
Occidental Petroleum, who, like the other oil companies, want
to control the entire resources of the world with no say-so by
those who live there." The protest was sponsored by the
Committee for a New Colombia, International ANSWER and
others.
