DORAVILLE, GA.
A peach of a protest
Supporters of the Taco Bell Truth Tour cheered as two big
buses pulled into the parking lot of the UAW Local 10 union
hall in Doraville, Ga., on March 1. Some 200 demonstrators then
marched along busy Buford Highway, in the heart of the Latino
and Asian immigrant community, to a Taco Bell restaurant.
Accompanied by the beat of drums, the chant "Boycott Taco Bell"
resounded loud and clear.
Hundreds of cars slowed to read the colorful banners and
signs. After spirited picketing, a program of worker
testimonials and solidarity statements was held in the
autoworkers' union hall. Among those expressing support were
two McDonald's workers who had come from France, representing a
historic strike against the global fast-food company in Paris
and Marseilles. They will be traveling with the tour to
illustrate the exploitation of those who prepare the food and
those who harvest it. Bosses subject both groups of workers to
low wages, hazardous working conditions, harassment and
speed-up, and arbitrary treatment.
At the close of the inspiring meeting, volunteers signed up
to picket Taco Bell restaurants in Atlanta.
