They're still waiting
Here's a book we found in a dusty corner of our library the
other day: "Castro's Final Hour," by Andres Oppenheimer. It's a
weighty tome, 475 yellowing pages, and published exactly 10
years ago by Simon & Schuster. How the author must wish he
could change that title. If only he had written "final decade,"
or maybe "final century."
Final millennium? Actually, none of them would have been
right. The euphoria of U.S. capital in the early 1990s over
Cuban socialism's imminent demise has soured. Wonder what
happened to that $10-billion investment fund that Jeb Bush
started back then to cash in on Cuba going capitalist? Those
stocks must be deader than Enron's by now.
