Charleston workers celebrate victory

Longshore workers in Charleston, S.C., have reason to celebrate. Last November they beat back a state frameup involving criminal charges against five workers after a police assault on a legal picket line at a scab ship. On March 2 they celebrated with the inauguration of a brand-new union headquarters. ILA Local 1422 President Ken Riley, on left in the photo, had toured the country, drumming up support from local unionists and activists all the way up to the national AFL-CIO.

People came to Charleston from all over to join hundreds of longshore workers and their families, Black and white, in the celebration. At the podium is Julián Garcia of the International Dockworkers Council, based in Barcelona, Spain, and a translator.
