Contractor pays $6 an hour
Pickets say 'hire union labor'
New York City Building Trades workers rallied for a second
day of noontime protests at Sixth Avenue and 17th Street on
July 17. They were protesting against the awarding of a
non-union building contract to the E.R. Sherry Co.
Accompanied by an eight-foot rubber rat, famous in the New
York City labor movement as a symbol for anti-union bosses,
union workers chanted and blew whistles, vowing to continue
their protest against the erection of a building with non-union
labor.
"Yesterday we had 120 in the protest, today we have over
200. F.R. Sherry's paying those workers $6 an hour; non-union
workers don't have decent or safe working conditions," one
organizer told Workers World.
"The offices and residences they are building will pay top
dollar for rent, but they're paying the workers nothing for
constructing this luxury building," said Anthony Rogolo of the
New York District of Carpenters. "You know what this means?
Rudy [Giuliani, NYC mayor] is trying to kick unions out of New
York!"
The organizers called on all union members in New York to
come down to the protests to support union labor and decent
working conditions, and vowed to repeat the protest daily until
they win. --Heather Cottin
