NYC rally calls for trans protection

New York
Trans groups and individuals rallied outside City Hall
here on May 4 to support the introduction of progressive
legislation.
The law, introduced into the New York City Council that
day, would protect all transsexual, transgender and
gender-variant New Yorkers from discrimination in employment,
housing and public accommodations in the five boroughs.
If passed, the law would amend the New York City human
rights law to include protection against discrimination based
on gender identity and gender expression.
Groups whose members took part in the demonstration
included Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR),
New York Association for Gender Rights Advocacy, Metropolitan
Gender Association, Positive Health Project, Metropolitan
Community Church, Empire State Pride Agenda, Housing Works
Transgender Advocacy Group and the International Action
Center. City Council member Christine Quinn also
participated.
The demonstration was dedicated to the memory of STAR
co-founder Marsha P. Johnson, Bambi LaMore, Bubbles, Amanda
Milan and other trans people who have died or been murdered
by bigots.
