Protest against Ariel Sharon Sept. 23
Palestinians and U.S. anti-imperialists will rally and
march on Sept. 23 in New York to protest the visit of Israeli
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
They are calling for an end to Israeli occupation of
Palestine and the right of Palestinians to return to their
homeland.
The event will be in solidarity with the Palestinian
Intifada, or uprising.
Sharon is infamous for having given Lebanese fascist
militias the go-ahead to massacre at least 2,000
Palestinians--most of them children, women and old men--in
the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in September 1982. He was
defense minister at the time and Israeli troops controlled
the area of Lebanon around the camps. After huge
demonstrations around the world, including in Israel itself,
an Israeli commission of inquiry recommended Sharon be
dismissed as Israeli defense minister for having allowed the
massacre. Now he is prime minister.
The rally will begin at noon on Sept. 23. It is sponsored
by Al-Awda and co-sponsored by the International Action
Center. For information, call (212) 633-6646.
