Women's day rally demands equal rights
Women in New York celebrated International Working Women's
Day March 8 by taking to the streets. The Daughters of
Rebellion/Hijas de Rebelion organized two noontime actions as
part of the second annual International Women's Strike on March
8.
First, the group picketed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's
office at 780 Third Ave. to demand that she take action on
issues of pressing importance to women of color--such as
getting the U.S. Navy out of Vieques, stopping cuts in welfare,
and ending sweatshop exploitation of women and girls worldwide.
To press the urgency of their demands, three representatives
from the group attempted to deliver a letter detailing the
issues. However, the women were stopped in the lobby and forced
to turn the letter over to two Clinton security guards.
The second phase of the demonstration was an outdoor rally
at the garment workers' monument at 39th Street and Seventh
Avenue. There speakers and cultural workers demanded better
living and working conditions for poor and oppressed women
around the globe. One statistic speakers cited was that, while
women and girls do two-thirds of the world's work, both paid
and unpaid, they receive just 5 percent of the income.
Principal organizer Nieves Ayreff of La Pena del Bronx
emphasized that women will continue to struggle worldwide until
their rights are fully realized. --Sue
