At luncheon for Israeli president
L.A. pickets call for 'Free Palestine'
When Israeli President Moshe Katzav went to Los Angeles's
very image-conscious Beverly Hilton Hotel June 6 to speak at a
luncheon sponsored by the World Affairs Council, he was met by
demonstrators supporting the Palestinian struggle.
Organized by the Free Palestine Coalition, the protesters
took the occasion to demand liberation and justice for the
Palestinian people, who have seen more and more of their land
seized by Israeli settlers. The activity took place 34 years
after the Six-Day War of 1967, when Israel tripled the
territory under its control, conquering the remainder of
historic Palestine--the West Bank and Gaza, along with Egypt's
Sinai Peninsula and Syria's Golan Heights. Hundreds of
thousands more Palestinians were driven into exile at that time
and are today still demanding the right of return to their
homeland.
