Stop U.S.-Israeli aggression
It is impossible to understand the latest Israeli
escalation of the war against the Palestinian and Arab people
without first examining the connection between the Israeli
state and U.S. imperialism.
The Ariel Sharon regime would never have ordered the
vicious land, sea and air attack on Palestinians in Gaza and
the adventurous bombing raid on a Syrian unit in Lebanon if
it were uncertain of the approval and backing of
Washington.
Pay no regard to the posturing of the two governments
after the fact. Colin Powell's mild disapproval of Israeli
policy is nothing more than a cover for his continued false
charges that the Palestinians "provoked" the incident. It's
in line with the U.S. administrations'--both Clinton's and
Bush's--blaming the youthful Palestinian demonstrators for
"provoking" the Israeli army into shooting them in the knee
to maim or in the heart to kill.
The Israeli state is completely dependent on U.S.
diplomatic, military and economic support for its very
existence. It came into being by seizing the land of another
people, and its current new wave of aggression shows it has
no intent of making peace with that people. On the contrary,
it is a belligerent state that continues to threaten new land
grabs from its neighbors--Palestinian, Syrian and Lebanese.
This policy has made it completely reliant on military force
and therefore the support of U.S. imperialism.
For its part, U.S. imperialism's goal in the Middle East
is to control the oil resources of the region and allow no
competing regional power to develop. It and the Israeli state
consider the Arab liberation movement and, indeed, any
strong, nationalist state the enemy of these goals. But it
should be clear that U.S. imperialism, and not the
expansionist Israeli state, is in the drivers seat and gives
the final orders.
Like the Pentagon, the Israeli army is frustrated that its
brutal assault on the youthful Intifada, while killing almost
400 Palestinians and maiming thousands, has failed to stop
that uprising. Sharon is trying to move the battle to an
arena where superior military technology will bring victory.
And where the battle with another nation--where it's not
necessary to look the foe in the eye--will rally his own
forces.
So far the latest aggression has only served to rally the
Arab world behind the Palestinian attempt to free their
homeland.
Stop U.S.-Israeli aggression!
