'Iron Man' celebrates his 95th B-day
Ted Dostal, one of the founders of Workers World Party,
celebrated his 95th birthday on Aug. 12 at his home in
Cleveland. Ted joined his comrades in singing “The
International” and “Solidarity
Forever.”
For 26 years, Dostal was a leader of the Steel Workers
union in Youngstown, Ohio. Over the last six decades, he has
led workers’ struggles in the steel plants and
organized literally hundreds of demonstrations in support of
the anti-war and Black liberation movements. He was sent to
jail twice for his efforts.
Called the “Iron Man” by his enemies in the
local police Red Squad, Dostal became even more active after
he “retired” from the steel plant. He was active
in seniors’ issues and marched alongside the
women’s movement and the lesbian/gay/bi/trans
movement.
In 1995, on his 89th birthday, Dostal traveled to
Philadelphia to join thousands in a major demonstration
supporting imprisoned Black revolutionary journalist Mumia
Abu-Jamal.
