Continent-wide solidarity conference to strategize
against Plan Colombia
By Andy
McInerney
Hundreds of delegates from Latin America, North America
and Europe are scheduled to take part in the "First
International Encounter for Solidarity and Peace in Colombia
and Latin America" from July 20 to 22 in San Salvador. The
conference is being hosted by the International Committee for
Solidarity with the People of El Salvador, the International
Solidarity Center, the Salvadoran Foundation for Democracy
and Local Development, and the Farabundo Martí
National Liberation Front.
The main themes of the conference will be opposing the
U.S.-sponsored Plan Colombia and its current formulation in
the "Andean Initiative." Organizers hope that the conference
will be an impetus for new and stronger solidarity with the
struggling people of Colombia.
A number of international dignitaries are scheduled to
address the conference, including Nobel Prize winners Adolfo
Pérez Esquivel, Rigoberta Menchu, and José
Saramago; Brazilian Workers Party leader Luis Ignacio "Lula"
da Silva; and Col. Lucio Gutiérrez, a leader of the
1999 Ecuadorian uprising against the U.S.-backed government
there.
From the United States, former Attorney General Ramsey
Clark, political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal, writer James
Petras, linguist and analyst Noam Chomsky and several others
are scheduled to deliver speeches or send statements.
Hundreds of Mexican students are scheduled to drive a
caravan from Mexico City to San Salvador for the
conference.
From the United States, delegations from the International
Action Center, the Colombia Action Network and the Committee
in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador are planning to
attend.
