Hit the CITI, save the planet
Environmental activists unfurled a 20-foot banner from
flagpoles outside of Citigroup's Manhattan headquarters
during rush hour on April 16. The banner read "Hey CITI, not
with my money!"
The action aimed at calling attention to Citigroup's
leading role in bankrolling environmentally and socially
destructive projects around the world.
The event followed April 11 protests in 80 cities in 12
countries, and the launch of a student-led boycott of
Citigroup credit cards.
A broad coalition of groups also planned to bring the
campaign to Citigroup's shareholder meeting at Carnegie Hall
on April 17. Those organizations include Rainforest Action
Network, the New York chapter of the National Organization
for Women, Inner City on the Move and United for a Fair
Economy.
