JUNE 2 IN CINCINNATI
Join anti-racist march
People all across the United States are making plans to
travel to Cincinnati on June 2 for a March for Justice. The
call for this demonstration was triggered by the fatal
shooting of unarmed Timothy Thomas, 19, by police officer
Steven Roach in that city on April 7.
Thomas was the 15th Black male killed by Cincinnati police
since 1995. And he was the fourth African American in just
five months shot to death by local cops.
The shooting of Thomas ignited the biggest rebellion in
that city since the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. The African American community in Cincinnati rebelled for
three days after Thomas was gunned down. Many groups tried to
hold protests in the city to demonstrate their anger at
racism and police brutality.
But in response, the mayor declared a state of emergency
and over 800 people were arrested.
Now dozens of groups in Cincinnati are calling for a
massive March for Justice on June 2. The march focuses on
three demands: Stop police killings and the abuse of police
power, end the police department's racist patterns and
practices, and build social and economic justice.
Many people who are outraged by racist profiling and
police killings in their own communities in cities large and
small are making plans to march in the streets of
Cincinnati.
