Protest at Zionist festival
Arabs & Jews support Palestinian struggle

Brookline, Mass.
On June 10 Arabs and Jews, African Americans, Muslims from
several communities, unionists and human-rights activists
fighting oppression around the world held a protest here
outside a Zionist celebration of "Israeli independence."
Although the demonstration was originally scheduled for
the same side of the street as the Zionist festival, police
made the protesters move across the street. Cops also banned
sound equipment for the protest, claiming the pro-Israel
event had an "exclusive use" permit.
Despite the heavy police presence and harassment from the
Zionists, the demonstration continued with spirited chanting.
Passersby took leaflets demanding an end to the occupation of
Palestine and U.S. funding of Israel and supporting the
Palestinian uprising and their right to return to their
homeland.
Amer Jubran, a Palestinian who had been leading the
demonstration and chants, was pulled to the side by police
around 2 p.m. They arrested him.
Jubran had been negotiating with the cops all day,
complying with their requests to move across the street, to
not block foot traffic and to not use bullhorns. There was no
justification or cause for his arrest.
Police officers on the scene refused to divulge the
charges or the reason for the arrest. Funds were collected
for bail, a lawyer was secured and consulted, and a
delegation went to the Brookline police station.
Jubran was held overnight and finally released the
following afternoon. He has been charged with assault and
battery with a dangerous weapon--a shod foot. A campaign is
being launched against these frameup charges.
