2,500 ruling-class men to meet
What a place for a protest
By John
Catalinotto
What, within the United States, would provide the perfect
foil for a demonstration that unites the working class,
oppressed people, women, lesbian/gay/bi/ trans people and any
progressive struggle? Here's one venue that has to be near
the top.
This July 14, some 2,500 ruling-class men--and only
men--from big business and government will be meeting in
Bohemian Grove in Monte Rio, Calif., for the annual rituals
of the rich.
And the International Action Center in California has put
out a call for action to protest what it calls "a sinister
convergence of many of the world's most dangerous and
destructive individuals, from Richard
Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and the Bechtels, to Henry Kissinger,
Edwin Meese, much of the Hoover Institute board, and the CEOs
of such Fortune 500 giants as Dupont, Weyerhauser, PG&E,
Bank of America, etc., etc., etc. Many top (male) figures in
the Bush administration are members of the club.
"It's summer camp for the elite, but there's nothing
harmless about this gathering," says the IAC's call, which
adds that "everyone who is opposed to corporate globalization
and the Bush program should join in the march and
protest.
"From the point of view of the corporations and their
politicians, it [globalization] means one freedom above all:
the right of capital--particularly U.S. capital --to freely
exploit the labor and resources of the world. Anything that
stands in the way of maximizing profits-- whether it's labor
unions or environmental regulations, public services or
national independence-
must be broken down and destroyed. ...
"Those who resist are subjected to war, intervention,
occupation and blockade-- from Iraq to Cuba, from Palestine
to Korea, from Colombia to Angola, from China to Mexico. In
their quest to dominate the world, the Bush administration
proposes a new version of Star Wars and pursues nuclear
first-strike capability in the guise of 'national missile
defense.'
"Bohemian Grove has served as a key venue where the rich
and powerful build consensus upon the policies they will
inflict on the people and our environment."
The IAC asks individuals and organizations to respond to
help make the mass march and demonstration at Bohemian Grove
a powerful blow against the racist, anti-worker, anti-gay and
sexist globalization agenda.
