The family and friends of Joe Wilbon gathered at 24th and
Brentwood streets in East Baltimore June 5 to demand justice on
the first anniversary of his death.
Wilbon was the victim of a police beating. His family and
the All Peoples Congress have been pressing for justice and an
end to police killings.
At the site of his body shop in the neighborhood where
police beat him to death, the group placed flowers and candles.
Renee Washington, who had been engaged to marry Wilbon, said
with tears in her eyes, "We will not forget Joey and all of the
wonderful things he did for this community and we will continue
to fight for justice."
Referring to Baltimore Electric & Gas Co., she went on:
"He is with us when we fight against the BG&E bill
increases and all of our fights for justice. I can see Joey
right now. The little dance he did and how kind he was to
everyone."
A number of neighborhood residents took the microphone to
describe Wilbon's kindness.
Sharon Ceci, a volunteer organizer for the All Peoples
Congress, denounced Mayor Martin O'Malley's zero tolerance
policy that has resulted in more police abuses and the
demonization of youth.
