Pilots get 'briefed'
Foes of sanctions on
Iraq take arrests at airbase

On
Feb. 26, 10 people from central and western New York State were arrested
as they attempted to enter the front gate of the National Guard airbase
near Syracuse. They were part of a group of over 60 activists who confronted
F-1 fighter plane pilots being deployed to enforce the imperialist "no-fly"
zone over Iraq.
The
activists attempted to give food and medicine to the flyers, urging that food,
not bombs, be delivered to the Iraqi people. This action was aimed at calling
attention to the U.S.-led United Nations economic sanctions that have devastated
the Iraqi people for nearly a
decade.
All
those arrested were charged with criminal trespass and held on $500 bonds each.
Among them was Jerome Berrigan, an 80-year-old
grandparent.
The
Feb. 26 initiative was sponsored by Central New York Pax Christi, St. Francis
Farm Catholic Worker, American Friends Service Committee of Upstate New York and
the Central New York Islamic
Center.
Before
entering the base, several of those later arrested described the suffering of
the Iraqi people--especially children--that has been reported on by fact-finding
delegations returning from travel to Iraq.
Richard
Keough of Syracuse, an organizer of the Feb. 26 action, told Workers World
newspaper about how little the people in the United States know about the
illegal and immoral policies carried out by the U.S. government against the
Iraqi people.
A
so-called "no-fly zone" bars Iraqi airplanes from flying over much of their own
country. This violation of sovereignty was imposed on Iraq unilaterally by the
U.S. and Britain. It has no legal sanction from any international body, and has
been used as a pretext for further war and aggression against the Iraqi
people.
On
Feb. 25, Keough unsuccessfully attempted to deliver 1,200 signatures to Governor
George Pataki urging him not to allow the New York State Air National Guard to
be sent to
Iraq.
The
protesters have promised to oppose future deployments of the New York State Air
National Guard to Iraq. A demonstration is already planned for March 11. Those
interested in joining the protests should contact Dick Keough at (315) 476-0048.
