Tentative settlement by Philly city workers

As Workers World went to press, a tentative contract settlement was announced between the city of Philadelphia and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees District Council 33, representing 11,000 city workers. Full details of the tentative agreement were not yet available. AFSCME District Council 47, representing 3,000 workers, had not agreed to the settlement as of July 25.

Members of both councils have been working without a contract since July 1. The unions had jointly set July 25 as a strike date, posing Philadelphia's ruling establishment with the threat of picket lines during the Republican Convention. A full report and analysis of these developments will appear in a future issue of WW.
