Moorehead-La Riva:

We stand shoulder to shoulder with Palestine

Workers World Party candidates Monica Moorehead and Gloria La Riva issued the following statement Oct. 3.

Workers World Party condemns the brutal killings of over 50 Palestinian protesters by U.S.-backed Israeli military forces in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Further, we demand an immediate end to the $10-million-a-day U.S. funding of the racist Israeli settler regime, which for more than 50 years has served as Washington and Big Oil's pit bull in the Middle East.

Protests erupted Sept. 28 after Israeli war criminal Ariel Sharon provocatively led a delegation to the Islamic holy site of Haram al-Sharif in occupied East Jerusalem. Israel stole the area in 1967. The U.S. and Israeli regimes are trying to keep control of East Jerusalem in the latest round of so-called "peace talks" with the Palestinian Authority. But the Palestinian people are determined to make East Jerusalem the capital city of an independent Palestinian state.

The West Bank and Gaza are boiling over with righteous anger over the continuous U.S./Israeli delays in the "peace process" established by the imperialists. Millions of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza, those living inside Israel and the nearly 5 million refugees living in other parts of the Middle East had looked forward to Sept. 12--when a final agreement was supposed to have been reached and an independent Palestinian state established.

Instead, the Clinton administration, the Republican Congress, George W. Bush and Al Gore, along with the corporate-owned media, are all united in supporting Israeli stall tactics while trying to demonize Palestinian Authority President Yasir Arafat and the Palestinian people. We reject this racist anti-Arab campaign, which is reminiscent of the smear tactics used against the South African anti-apartheid movement during the 1960s and 1970s.

We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Palestinian youths who are fighting back against the Israeli occupying force with rocks, bricks, bullets and anything at hand. Workers World Party will continue to organize workers and oppressed people in the United States, including Jewish people, to support the righteous demands of the Palestinians for an end to Israeli occupation, the right of return for all refugees and a sovereign Palestinian state.

U.S. out of the Middle East! Long live the Palestinian struggle!
