The
13th annual Creating Change Conference of the National Gay and Lesbian Task
Force met in Atlanta Nov. 9-12. The Atlanta location gave the lesbian/gay/bisexual/
transgender movement an opportunity to link up strongly with the movement
against racism in the South.
At
the opening session over 1,000 delegates gave a prolonged standing ovation to
Coretta Scott King. They applauded when she called for "common struggle against
bigotry and oppression."
The
next day over 400 people, most of them youths, marched and rallied against the
Georgia state flag because it incorporates the Confederate flag of slavery in
its
design.
The
closing session was followed by a March of Respect past the Martin Luther King
Jr. Center, led by Coretta Scott
King.
Conference
workshop topics addressed such issues as "uprooting white supremacy" and
"building alliances across
borders."
The
conference also consolidated its relationship with the labor movement. For the
first time, the entire group of workshops about work-place issues was conducted
by representatives of Pride At Work. PAW is the official lesbian, gay, bisexual
and trans constituency group of the
AFL-CIO.
Leaflets
announcing a counter-inaugural protest in Washington Jan. 20 drew a favorable
response.
