1199 in New York
'Lay off the bosses!'
"Lay
off the bosses!" chanted hundreds of angry 1199/service Employees hospital
workers at a picket line in front of New York's Continuum Health Partners
July 12. The workers protested Continuum's plan to cut over 450 jobs at
Beth Israel, St. Luke's-Roosevelt and Long Island College hospitals. Continuum
is one of New York's largest hospital profiteers.
Most
of the projected layoffs would affect Medi caid and Medicare services. Steep
government cutbacks in those health care programs for the poor, disabled
and seniors will cost New York-area hospitals $2.5 billion by 2001.
That
hasn't stopped Continuum's top managers from giving themselves millions
of dollars in raises.
Leaders
of 1199 charge that Continuum is trying to close its projected $72 million
deficit on the backs of its workers and patients. According to the union,
many nursing units in Continuum hospitals are already dangerously understaffed.
