LOS ANGELES

Diverse speakers blast sanctions on Iraq

By Workers World Los Angeles bureau

The Save the Iraqi Children Coalition and the International Action Center held an event in Los Angeles Dec. 10 to stop the genocidal U.S./UN sanctions against Iraq. Frank Dorrel and Preston Wood co-chaired the meeting.

Fellowship of Reconciliation's Linda Tubach and the IAC's Magda Miller and John Parker described how sanctions are killing innocent Iraqi people, especially children, and how more and more countries are challenging the sanctions by flying aid directly to Iraq in defiance of the Pentagon.

The honored guest at the event was S. Brian Willson, a Vietnam veteran who lost his legs in 1987. An anti-war activist, Willson was run over while trying to stop a U.S. Navy train carrying weapons destined for murdering civilians in Central America.

Willson talked about the need for people to take responsibility for fighting to stop U.S. war and plunder abroad. "It's something we must do for our health," he said.

He referred to the experience of veterans who've gone back to Vietnam to help rebuild that country and undo some of the horrors caused by U.S. imperialism.

Hwa Young Lee, West Coast coordinator of the Pan Korean Alliance for Reunification in the USA, spoke about the horrors perpetrated by U.S. imperialism in south Korea during the Korean War.

"I remember how, as children, my brother and I would be tossed from one U.S. soldier to another," said Lee.

Lee's organization, along with the IAC and other groups, is preparing a "Truth Commission" to expose U.S. war crimes against the Korean people.

Another speaker inspired the audience with his presence. Alex Sanchez, who was framed up, thrown in prison and threatened with deportation by the infamous Rampart division of the Los Angeles Police Department, won his freedom this year. Many in the audience participated in the struggle to free him.

Other speakers called for solidarity with political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal and the people of Colombia in their struggle against U.S. intervention.
