Another case of police brutality took place here Jan. 28
when 15-year-old Michael Anglin was shot in the back of the
head on a street corner by a police officer.
At a community meeting after the killing, 350 angry
residents of the area, including leaders of various churches
and parents, heard the Rev. Herbert Daughtry, who came from the
Albany trial of the four New York cops who shot Amadou Diallo
to denounce this murder, and Max Antoine, a Haitian immigrant
who is paralyzed from the waist down as a result of police
violence.
"We must build a movement that will shake the state of New
Jersey. I see a movement building. Michael Anglin will not have
died in vain. We will march together," said the Rev. Daughtry.
Also present were members of the New Jersey chapter of the
NAACP and members of the New Black Panther Party for Self
Defense. Juliette Smith, a nurse's aide in Jersey City, said,
"I have a 16-year-old son. It could have been him. As a parent,
I felt I had to come to protest this police violence."
Organizers in the community are planning to meet weekly to
build actions in protest of police violence.
