15-city tour brings Cuban unionists to meet U.S. workers

By Cheryl LaBash

Beginning on July 19 in Boston, workers in the United States will have a rare opportunity to meet with Cuban union leaders. Three leading member of the Confederation of Cuban Workers (CTC) were granted U.S. entry visas for a 1-month, 15-city speaking tour organized by the U.S.- Cuba Labor Exchange.

The delegation includes General Secretary of Cultural Workers Olga Rosa Gomez Cortes, International Secretary of the CTC Leonel Gonzalez Gonzalez, and CTC International Relations Department representative Manuel Montero Bistilleiro. Both Gomez and Gonzalez are elected deputies for the National Assembly of People's Power.

The CTC has accepted the frequent invitations of U.S. workers and unions to send representatives in the past. Schedules were drawn up, meetings planned, and travel arrangements made only to have the U.S. government deny the visa requests at the last minute. It has been nine years since any representatives of the CTC have been allowed into the United States.

Growing numbers of U.S. workers are traveling to Cuba to experience the reality for themselves and many fight to end the U.S. blockade. However, this tour will bring Cuban workers right into shops, offices
and union halls for a broader dialogue.

For U.S. workers, who overwhelmingly supported the right of Elián González and his family to return home to Cuba and who were moved by the strength and dignity of Juan Miguel González, this tour is a chance to meet Cuban workers face to face.
