Artists use chalk to remember martyrs

On Oct. 21, activists supporting the Palestinian struggle
covered part of New York's Union Square Park with chalkings
commemorating victims of Israeli terror. The
activists--including Palestinians, Israelis and people from
the United States--used chalk to draw life-size figures for
the over 110 Palestinians who have been killed in the last
three weeks. For each person, they included the name, age and
the area of their body that was shot. They also placed marks
for each of the almost 4,000 people who have been
wounded.
The activists were also protesting U.S. financial and
military aid to Israel and Washington's complicity in the
repression. They spent the day leafleting to passers-by with
fact sheets and information about upcoming activities.
Oz Shelach, one of the planners of the event, said: "Do we
even know the name of the ambulance driver who died while
doing his job? Does the world know the names of the 110
Palestinians who have been killed in the last three weeks? We
hope that Saturday's street art will raise the awareness that
the media has failed to raise."
The organizers call themselves Art Action. Some are part
of the local chapter of Al-Awda, a national coalition
organizing for the right of 5 million Palestinian refugees to
return to their homeland. According to a press release, this
activity was part of the "countless vigils, demonstrations
and other activities that have been organized [in the United
States] over the last three weeks and are intensifying as the
violence continues in the region."
