GOP BASHED IN CAMDEN, N.J.
'Nowhere to hide'
Seventy-five protesters confronted Republican delegates in
Camden, N.J., July 30. The delegates were guests at a glitzy
waterfront ceremony heralding the opening of the Republican
National Convention in nearby Philadelphia.
Many activists marched across the Benjamin Franklin Bridge
to join the Camden protest after attending the Unity 2000
rally and the anti-police-brutality demonstration in
Philadelphia.
The march and rally were called by the Pro-Vieques
Coalition and the community group Democracy for Camden. The
front row of activists carried signs with huge letters
painted in bright colors. Together the signs spelled out
"U.S. Navy out of Vieques." Others chanted, "Money for jobs
for the people of Camden."
Protesters also targeted New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd
Whitman. They charged her with fostering racist profiling of
African Americans by the state police and with disregarding
the poor in Camden.
