PONTIAC, MICH.

Protesters ‘am-Bush’ Gov. Death

By Mark Marzolf

Pontiac, Mich.

The Bush/Cheney campaign wagon was met with militant protest Aug. 5 in Pontiac, Mich. Several young activists from Detroit held banners and chanted throughout Texas Gov. George W. Bush's speech. They disrupted him on several occasions.

The protesters, including two members of the International Action Center, chanted "murderer" and "George Bush, you can't hide, we charge you with genocide." The IAC representatives held signs that read, "Gov. Death executed an innocent man, Gary Graham! Stop the racist death machine," and "Bush = lynch law."

The small but determined group managed to capture the Republican nominee's attention with their militant voices. Despite being quarantined by police at the back of the rally, the chanters prompted Bush to comment on "silencing the angry voices of dissent."

However, the dissent strengthened when challenged by the establishment and its intimidation tactics. Protesters reported police harassment and violent, offensive behavior by the pro-Bush crowd. The activists were spit on, pushed, kicked and nearly attacked by a vicious Rottweiler, all within view of the police.

But their voices only grew stronger. They continued chants of "Bush murdered 137, stop the racist death penalty!"

Pro-Bush attendees and supporters of Democratic candidate Al Gore encircled the demonstrators in an attempt to silence the young activists. A sea of chants shouting, "Bush! Bush!" and "Gore! Gore!" enveloped the rally.

The anti-Bush protesters answered the challenge, this time adding a new dimension, chanting "No more Bush, no more Gore, it's class war!"

Soon the determined voices of the young activists drowned out the pro-establishment ones, showing once again that it is not the size of the movement that counts, but the militancy of its actions and voices.

Am-Bushed once again!
