Canvas captures cruelty of sanctions
The agony of the Iraqi people under sanctions has been
captured in an art exhibit currently showing at the office of
the International Action Center in New York City. Artist Irving
Fierstein says the acrylic paintings show "the true results of
that genocide," which was caused by "Wall Street-sponsored
sanctions and war in Iraq."
One painting, entitled "Victory Parade," is a satire on the
"yellow ribbon parades" that exulted over U.S. military might
during "Desert Storm." As missiles roar into the night and
star-spangled marchers trample bodies, an Arab child is
consumed by ribbons of yellow flame.
In another painting entitled "Why?," the canvas not only
shows us a tragic scene but seems to echo with the enraged
screams of a mother burying her child.
The artist has produced many moving banners and posters for
progressive causes over the years, in addition to his
prodigious output of paintings.
