SAN FRANCISCO
1997 Acteal massacre commemorated
One hundred people gathered in downtown San Francisco
on Dec. 22 in front of the Mexican consulate. The protest
commemorated the second anniversary of the Acteal massacre.
On Dec. 22, 1997, 45 unarmed Tzotzil Indians had been
massacred by paramilitary terrorists trained and armed by the
elite troops of the U.S.-backed Mexican Army.
Protesters held aloft crosses with the names of those killed
at Acteal. They also carried a painted banner that was sent
three days later to Acteal as a sign of solidarity and a
message that the massacre will never be forgotten.
The action was organized by Casa Bonampak, International
Action Center, Global Exchange, Media Alliance and the San
Francisco Zapatista Coalition.
Despite scant media attention in the U.S., the low-intensity
war being waged against the Indigenous communities in the
highlands of Chiapas continues on a daily basis. As many as
70,000 Mexican troops led by officers trained in the U.S. at
the hated School of the Americas surround these
communities.
